Eureka Forge leads the way in metalwork craftsmanship. Learn about the people who made this company a success.

The following information was posted in an article from St. Louis Homes +Lifestyles.

Todd Kinnikin, the president and self-proclaimed ringmaster of Eureka Forge, has taken what was once a one-man artisan studio to a company of 14 talented artisans who possess a myriad of skills from mechanical engineering and welding to sculpting.  As the protégé son of an artist mother and engineer father, and the grandson of a blacksmith, Todd turned his hobby of making Damascus knives into one of the best forging companies with clients throughout Missouri, the United States and the world.

Todd's good friend, Rodney Roots, is the workshop's Forgemaster. Collaborative team efforts and Todd's expectation of hard work and excellence puts Eureka Forge at the forefront of creating some of the most beautiful metalwork in North America.

Todd, a proud father, reports that the legacy continues with his son Michael, a mechanical engineer. The engineering of a project is so important, and Todd explains, “This business is very mathematical. We use a lot of complicated geometry because you need to know what size steel to use and how to support the structure.”

From balustrades, fences and gates, to furnishings, décor and sculptures, Eureka Forge's work appears worldwide in custom homes, botanical gardens, museums and restaurants.

Eureka Forge's custom metalwork process

Fabricating the custom pieces is a collaboration among everyone at the shop. Each person specializes in one or more areas of the process. The shop is arranged in a rotation, starting with a raw materials area, then moving to a cutting area, forging, assembly and finishing areas.

"We try to fuse old world techniques with modern technology to be more affordable," says Mike, shop owner. "Today, we use computer-aided drafting software to design a piece. We have a programmable cutting machine that can take the raw materials and cut all the pieces to the right size. We utilize power hammers to expedite the forging process," he explains.

Some interesting facts about the forging process.

Forging is a manufacturing process where metal is pressed, pounded or squeezed under great pressure into high strength parts. These parts are known as forgings. The process is normally (but not always) performed hot by preheating the metal to a desired temperature before it is worked. Forging is different than the casting process since forged parts are never melted and poured as in the casting process. The forging process can create parts that are stronger than those manufactured by any other metalworking process.

Brief history of Eureka Forge

Eureka Forge was founded in 1982 as a division of Kinnikin & Associates, an established residential and commercial construction firm.  As this aspect of the business gained attention, demand increased and grew to dominate the activities of the company.  As a result, the construction arm was sold in 1993 and Eureka Forge has become one of North America's foremost producers of custom architectural metalwork.
